All humanity's miseries derive from not being able to sit quietly in a room alone.

NACHIKETA VIDYALAY

Shree Nachiketa Vidhyalay is a school established under the Swami Vivekananda Education and Welfare Trust. It is situated in Navsari, Gujarat State in India.

As part of the trust, the main focus of the school is to provide education to pre-primary to secondary-level children in an economically disadvantaged area. In addition to education goals, the school's program is designed to promote the development of students' physical health and high moral standards.

Current BuildingCurrently, the school is a single two-story, concrete building with 10 classrooms. Each classroom is about the size of a one-car garage. Only a few of the classrooms have desks so in most classes, children sit on mats on the floor. Class sizes vary from 20 to 30 students at the pre-primary and primary level, while classes for older students tend to be smaller. There is a small principal's office, but no staff room or bathrooms for faculty or students.

Classroom 1Due to the limited space, pre-primary and primary-level children attend school in the morning, and the older intermediate-level children attend classes in the afternoon. The school is unable to provide secondary education, so for many children their education ends after the intermediate level unless their parents can afford to pay for them to attend a secondary school elsewhere.

Classroom 2As a social service, ONE has committed to help the Trust establish a secondary school. With the funds provided by ONE in 2005, the Trust was able to purchase land in the same area as the existing school. Additional funding will be provided for construction, which is scheduled to begin in 2006.

Classroom 3At the secondary level, the focus is on a well-rounded education. The school will meet the academic needs of the students and also provide technical and computer training. Students will be encouraged to learn social responsibility by undertaking welfare activities, such as helping people during natural disasters and participating in public service. The school will also provide training in the cottage industry, which involves creating home-based products to decrease reliance on factory-based products.

The secondary school will provide a library for staff and students. Plans also include a staff room, separate bathrooms for girls and boys, a principal's office and eight classrooms.

The school will need continual funding for items such as computers, school supplies, furniture, text books, and library books.

All donations are tax-deductible and will be used only for the school. There are no administrative costs attached to the donations.
